CHAPTER 12

My name was whispered on masculine lips. I recognized the voice, but it sounded far away. Warmth surrounded me and I snuggled close before a large hand rubbed my back. It was too big to be that of my warlock. My eyes snapped open as I met Dran’s dark eyes. Sometimes I couldn’t tell the brown from the black, and this was one of those times.

“Hey,” my unease turned to relief as Drin rubbed my back. It was comforting, and I was surprised at how safe I felt with my two doppels.

Drin hugged me. “You had us worried. What happened to you?”

“You didn’t see the witch? I thought I heard a crash downstairs.”

“That was us. We broke through the front door when it didn’t unlock. We found you unconscious. What woman are you referring to?”

If the magic bitch had left, it meant she wasn’t ready to tangle with my demon big brothers. I had no doubt she knew what was coming. “A witch and not a good one. She has been squatting there for some time.” I pointed to the corner where the rack was full of jars. “I am going to take bets that all that is dark in nature.” He helped me to my feet, and I noticed a brown patch on his chest.

Drin put his hand to the spot that looked like brown leather. “Do not be alarmed. I am mostly recovered, but I need a few more days to completely heal myself. Carnell is on his way, but our wings are faster.”

“You flew here when you aren’t fully recovered?” I asked incredulously.

Drin’s dark eyes focused on me. “It is harder for me to maintain my human form than my natural. The flying was not difficult.” He closed his eyes as his brother touched his shoulder.

“You cannot maintain this form. It was unwise to shift. Faith would have understood,” Dran said.

I realized the clothes Drin was wearing were not his usual dress shirt and pants. He had bare feet and the joggers and T-shirt were not a style I had seen him wear in the club. “You put these on when you arrived here.” I glanced around the storage room. “Is it safe for you to shift here? Are you in pain?”

Drin rubbed his chest as the brown leathery spot on his chest grew. “It is safe, but you have not been exposed to our natural form. We do not wish to scare you.”

I put my hand on his arm. “I know who you are. Your form doesn’t matter. Please shift so I know you aren’t in pain.” Carnell had warned me that doppelgangers were related to gargoyles and dragons. I had tangled with a phoenix and empusa. They couldn’t be worse than that, right?

Drin pulled off his shirt, leaving only his joggers. I understood why he had chosen a stretchy fabric. While he was muscular in his human form, his thighs stretched the material of his pants to the breaking point before his skin darkened to match the brown spot on his chest.
